Lots Of Americans Sit Out, But That’s OK

September 14, 2009

Brad Friedel had a clean sheet for Aston Villa’s 90 minute win over Birmingham, Tim Howard played well in Everton’s 2-1 loss to Clint Dempsey’s Fulham (who also played well), and Jozy Altidore and Charlie Davies each got some run, but there was a general lack of playing time for the Americans playing abroad this weekend, but that’s ok.

After playing two qualifiers, the second on a Wednesday, it was a much longer trip for, say Altidore to get back to Hull than it is for someone in Europe to get to their club team.

There were some troubling scenarios though: Eddie Johnson didn’t play at Fulham. Freddy Adu still isn’t playing in Portugal (and didn’t even dress).  Damarcus Beasley isn’t getting any playing time at Rangers, and will perhaps need a move back to MLS (or maybe a lower level SPL team) to have a prayer of making the final roster for the World Cup.

Oguchi Onyewu hasn’t gotten in for AC Milan, even though the team is absolute dogshit. It perhaps would have suited Gooch well to make sure he went to a club where he could play, but he should absolutely be getting run for Milan.

A couple other notes: It would be great if Maurice Edu and Jermaine Jones would recover from their respective injuries, as that would greatly increase our midfield depth, it would be nice to see Michael Bradley stop being a little bitch out there so he could play for his club, and Michael Orozco scored for San Luis this weekend. Maybe he should get a look at left back.
